The Health Canada registration authorizes the LightStrike6 for use in Canadian hospitals and builds on prior U.S. Food and Drug Administration authorization of the LightStrike+ device as a no-touch whole room microbial reduction technology. With the Canadian authorization in place, the company stated it is the first to have ultraviolet room disinfection technology authorized for healthcare use in both the United States and Canada.

Xenex reports that its LightStrike robots are currently used in more than 1,200 healthcare facilities worldwide and are supported by more than 48 peer-reviewed studies examining reductions in microbial contamination and pathogen transmission when used after standard cleaning. The LightStrike6 system delivers broad-spectrum UV-C light to disinfect patient rooms, operating rooms, and other clinical spaces, targeting high-touch surfaces such as bed rails, overbed tables, call buttons, and bathroom fixtures.

The LightStrike technology is intended to support hospital infection prevention programs, particularly in addressing persistent organisms including C. difficile, MRSA, and VRE. In a press release, Xenex also noted that the LightStrike6 was designed to integrate into environmental services and infection prevention workflows, with short room cycle times and tools to monitor system use and performance.

Xenex indicated that the LightStrike6 registration establishes a regulatory benchmark for hospital-grade UV room disinfection technology across North America. The LightStrike+ and LightStrike6 robots are manufactured in San Antonio, Texas, and are currently available.
